I've always been into Alcatraz, an anything like those kinds of stories. I was born an raised in Cali, but never been there personally. Always wanted to go. When the show came out with Alcatraz well i decided to look into the history more. I'm actually still reading this book an i love it! I'm on page 153 an this story coming from the doctor who worked there, had so many interesting characters in there an actually detailed them quite well. I even looked online to see if the stories an name's were real an honestly they were. I've yet to find that in a book, Well one's that have caught my eyes anyways.I would defently recommend this book to anyone, i think after i'm done reading it ill read it again. Too see things that doc seen i couldn't imagine seeing myself. He took it calmly there in the one place that made normal men into insane, suicidal, unstable to come back to normal everyday life. Great Book!! Can't wait to finish it!!! an worth what i paid for it.

We visited Alcatraz recently, and have family that worked at its replacement in Marion, IL. Very interesting book made even more interesting because it was written by someone outside of the prison systems.
Would like to thank the daughter who published her fathers daily life interaction with numerous criminals. Interesting to read on so many levels.

This book was very interesting, especially being written from the perspective of the doc on the Rock. A small glimpse into the life these inmates lived was fascinating.
This is the best history of life on Alcatraz that I've read. It is set in 1937 when the author worked as a physician to Alvin Karpis, Al Capone, and other residents of the Rock. I could not put the book down.
This book reads like a laundry list of who was treated, what heppened, a bit about who the inmate was. I had the feeling that much of the source material was daily logs, and perhaps a few patient charts, but the memories have faded a bit by now. This book failed to transport me to the Rock.

I wanted to feel how the doctor changed over time, what defenses he erected, and which turned out to be soul-saving. The central conflict between a doctor's inherent mission and that of the institution's did not emerge. I cannot, however, give anyone 1 star who has served in such a brutal place, and I hope the next book will show the results of digging deeper.
