The Homecoming A Novel About Spencer Mountain Earl Hamner 9780899669458 Books

Earl Hamner had written a few books and had had a screenplay credit for "Spencer's Mountain" in the early 1960's. He based his "Spencer's Mountain" books about growing up in his teen years in Schuyler, Virginia. This short novel is about a Christmas eve where his family is waiting for the return of his father who had to take work out of town. The father is possibly missing and his strong but gentile wife sends the main character on various adventures and mis-adventures in his attempt to locate his father. During this time the reader is introduced to the quirky folk around the mountain. The chapters are funny in spots but you really do feel the love this family has for each other during this Christmas eve during the great depression. It is always entertaining.

Since this book was based on the Spencer's Mountain series the names of the characters are different from those in "The Walton's" television series. The main character is Clay-Boy instead of John-Boy and the youngest daughter is Patty-Cake instead of Elizabeth. Even with the name changes any fan would recognize this as a story about the Walton's family. In fact, the basis of this book was used as the TV pilot for the television show "The Walton's" in 1971. The book does deviate a little from that production. My guess is the names were changed during the filming of the pilot to avoid conflict with the producers of the Spencer's Mountain movie.

This is a good book, perhaps Earl Hamner at his best. You do NOT have to be a fan of "The Walton's" television show to enjoy this book. It stands on its own. It is a very easy and enjoyable read and MUST for any die hard fan of "The Walton's" television series.

Nothing to say. Love it!
A precursor to the television series The Waltons. This author was so eloquent. I enjoyed hearing him speak as well, it was like listening to poetry.
I loved the book ! I saw the movie years ago, and loved the movie. It just gives you a homey feeling about the trials and tribulations of a large loving family and their neighbors. It was hard times, and showing how neighbors take care of one another in times of crisis.
My Uncle Eddie grew up with Earl Hammer, Jr. And took me to $chuyler, Va, in 1975 and I believe that same year I met Will Geer at Culpeper Baptist Home where he was making a documentary. Anything written by Mr. HAMNER gives me the most special memories of my Uncle. I got my passion for reading and writing from this man. This story is one I read over and makes me so happy!
I first learned about this book after watching the made for television special. It still comforts me and renews what Christmas is all about to me. I’ve read it too many times to remember and wraps me in a warm aura of times gone by. I truly believe that it’s a timeless classic piece of literature. Highly recommend
From the first time I saw "The Homecoming" on television when I was a small boy I've considered it one of my most favorite Christmas films. Somewhere along the years I realized that the film was based on a book, but I never read it until now. I can't recommend it enough. The sense of family and home and the love of same is present on every page. The story differs from the film - names have changed - Clay-boy is more familiar to most of us as John-boy, and the family name here is Spencer and not Walton. However, the essence of the source material has been captured. It's Christmas and Clay Spencer hasn't arrived home yet and a blizzard is on the way. Oldest son Clay-boy is sent to find his father and bring him home. It's an odyssey. He runs into the sheriff, Ike Godsey and Charlie Sneeds (under arrest for poaching), he attends services at "the black church," and end up at the home of two elderly lady bootleggers who give him "recipe" and a ride home through the snow in a horse drawn sleigh. The book has a happy ending that doesn't seem at all forced or unreasonable and left this reader in tears. Capote's "A Christmas Memory" (and the 1966 TV film with Geraldine Page) remains my very favorite Christmas story, but this runs a very close second.
It's Christmas Eve, 1933, on Spencer's mountain and Olivia Spencer along with her eight "thoroughbred" children, anxiously await their father's homecoming. With old man Winter wreaking one of his best, life goes on despite the trials and tribulations of life during the Great Depression, not to mention their apprehension that shakes each of them to the core, especially Olivia.

"The Homecoming" is a heartwarming story about that Christmas Eve day on Spencer Mountain that welcomes us into their daily lives; the chores, the childhood rivalry, the festive preparations including a harrowing encounter with an aggressive buck who's determined but thankfully fails to attack Clay-boy while he's searching for that perfect Christmas tree, the quest for the patriarch Clay, and finally a Christmas miracle at midnight. What the family didn't expect was the real miracle that followed.

Originally published in 1970 by Earl Hamner, Jr., CBS realized its potential and produced and aired the movie in 1971, not only with subtle changes to character's names but launching a franchise that America would come to know and love as the "The Waltons." If you've never seen the movie or the book, I recommend both, especially during the holidays! "The Homecoming" will fill your heart with love and the spirit of the season!
