"Miss Kate went up there. I went to check on her..." "What do you mean? You let her up there? Why?" he asked. "I didn't let her up there," Elsa said. "And why not? It's her house, too." "I Told you no one is allowed up there. No one." "Relax, Sam. I'm sure Miss Katherine didn't mean Kate," Elsa said."Damn it, woman! I told you when we first came here that Miss Katherine has rules..." "Why did you let her go up there?" Sam asked. I didn't allow her to do anything," Elsa said. "You still haven't told me what the big deal is." "It doesn't matter now." He moved to leave but she caught his wrist. "It matters to you and if it matters to you, it matters to me.".... Sam knew if Miss Katherine found out, there'd be hell to pay, but he couldn't physically make Kate leave. That left him without any other options.
Kate lived on the family plantation that her namesake grandmother Katherine owned. Kate was a veterinarian and took care of the animals as well as the farm itself. Her grandmother had raised her after the death of her parents and even after college and the death of her own husband, she still called the old place her home. She wanted to be no place else. So why was the attic off limits to her?
Kate knew something wasn't right. There were too many unanswered questions about her parents and the answer was in that attic. So after slipping the keys from her grandmother's room she went on a search through the attic. There hidden under some old boxes she found a small, blue journal that appeared to belong to her mother. She took it back to her room, read it and then went in search of her grandmother for the truth.
When Kate started asking questions I had no idea what she was going to turn up. I was truly surprised when I learned the answers to my own questions. I never dreamed her family secrets would turn out to be what they were. And I don't believe she had any idea as to the size of the can of worms she was about to open.
This book will make you stop and think. It will make you really understand that people do make mistakes but blood is normally thicker than those mistakes. And forgiveness is even thicker. A beautiful story of love and hate.

Shattered Lies S J Francis Books Reviews
Intense. This writing is filled with raw, searing emotion. This is a tale of old family secrets and the ensuing consequences when the tissue of lies begins to unravel. The story provides a harsh look at the ugly and destructive truths of prejudice. The reader is compelled to keep turning pages.
An engrossing novel with twists and turns, Shattered Lies, by S.J. Francis, will have you reading straight through. The story tells of family loyalty, deception, sacrifice, a surprising revelation, and finally, forgiveness. What grabbed me and kept me turning the pages were the strong female characters, Kate Thayer, Katherine Thayer, Elsa, Maddy, and Astrid, whose lives, much to their dismay, were intertwined tighter than tree roots. As Kate strives to untangle the mystery of her past, her grandmother, Katherine, stubbornly holds to her conviction that Kate will never learn the truth. A life-threatening crisis forces the five women to come to terms with their secrets and deceptions.
Shattered Lies is a summertime great beach-read.
It's one of those books that once you finish, you'll put on your shelf to read it again. I really was connected with Kate, and her story. It's a remarkable journey and it was written so much that you could feel the emotions jump off the page. There was a hint of mystery and a grand family connection, and a link to her home. A place that has always been her home, and always welcomed her, except for the secrets of the attic. This story brings you into an adventurous drama. Highly recommended!
(some spoilers)
Kate Thayer discovers she has been living a secret life when she happens upon her mother's diary in the attic of her grandmother, Katherine Thayer’s, house. One knows at this point in the novel that everything will change for this likable character and little of it for the better. If I were Kate’s friend I would've stopped her from reading, knowing there are secrets better left unknown. Fortunately, the author, SJ Francis, makes sure all the dirty little secrets, lies, adultery, and grief, surface to place obstacles in front of our protagonist to see what she's made of. This conflict is what kept me reading all the way to the end.
Kate not only finds out she is half-black but also that her mother dies in childbirth and the devastated father kills himself. That's plenty a narrative for most novels, but there is a cog in the works thrown in when it's revealed Kate has a twin and is now determined to find her and make right her family's betrayal of her sister, Astrid.
With the author’s wonderful writing and lucid exposition, I found myself lost in the story to the point that it was difficult to tell this was contemporary setting and not somewhere in the 1940s or 50s. This is dramatically tense read that stretches the gamut of emotions for both the characters and the reader. I highly recommend Shattered Lives.
After the death of her parents, Kate's namesake grandmother Katherine raises her on the family plantation.
When Kate leaves to attend university to become a veterinarian, she expects to begin a new life; a life on her own. But after graduation she returns to her childhood home to tend to the healthcare of the horses and farm animals there.
Curious about her parents' death, Kate questions servants and her grandmother about family history. When she learns the attic is off-limits to her and that her grandmother doesn't want Kate to learn the family secrets, she knows the attic holds the truth of her past. Determined to find answers, she removes the attic keys from her grandmother's room and climbs the attic stairs.
Hidden under a stack of old boxes, she discovers a small blue journal which belonged to her mother. She removes it and takes it to her room to read. From her mother's writings, she learns devastating secrets of her past and goes in search of her grandmother to untangle the mystery of lies and learn the whole truth.
