The Tudor Conspiracy A Novel The Elizabeth I Spymaster Chronicles C W Gortner Books

I’m writing one review for C.W. Gortner’s The Spymaster Chronicles series (The Tudor Secret, Conspiracy, and Vendetta) because I read them back to back and they flow very well as one continuous story. Our hero and spymaster, Brendan Prescott, is truly a loveable character; the kind of guy you’d love to have as a best friend or a boyfriend. He is humble, sometimes gives in to his weaknesses, and experiences a great deal of growth throughout the series. Typical of a Gortner character, he is never one- sided or flat, but is quite multidimensional and complex. I have been reading Gortner a bit backwards; having started with his latest novels, I am now working my way through his earlier publications and was delighted to discover this particular male lead whereas my previous experience with Gortner has been through female protagonists. He gives a believable and entertaining voice to both male and female leads.

For anyone familiar with the world of the Tudors and Elizabeth I, this will feel like a family reunion of sorts with a few newly added relatives that fit seamlessly within the storyline and as effortlessly as if they were there all along in history. I will not give spoilers to the plotline, but there is plenty of action, intrigue, and tension to move the reader forward at a rapid pace. I never find myself breezing by certain passages in order to get to the good parts; all the parts are good. I love this author’s descriptive abilities as well as his use of language. A couple of the series I read on kindle, and I love being compelled to click for the dictionary on words he’s introduced me to.

This is certainly a great series that I’d recommend to any reader, whether a follower of the Tudor era or not. Gortner proves that even in his first published works, he’s a splendid talent and has continued to hone his already impressive storytelling skills.

The Tudor Conspiracy A Novel The Elizabeth I Spymaster Chronicles C W Gortner Books Reviews

I have not read the first book of this series but, I found the character's motivations in this book to be somewhat obscure and difficult to follow. Most of them lack the depth which I would like in a historical novel concerning the lives of such notable people. For me, to be compelling, a historical novel must be more interesting than the actual history.

The worst part of the novel, however, was the poisoning. As a chemist, I found it to be completely implausible and contrived (even today, it would be hard if not impossible to find a contact poison which would produce the symptoms within the time noted). Given that this is supposed to be a major event in the novel, it left me feeling somewhat indifferent to the outcome.
This second entry into the series about a fictional Elizabethan spy with a dangerous past was well plotted even if I don't like any of the things that happened personally to the main characters although they did serve the plot line. The plots against Queen Mary are given a plausible ring for the invented motives and actions leading up to the historical events depicted.

I am hopeful that the third entry will rehabilitate the personal failings displayed in this book otherwise I may lose interest in the series.
While I really enjoyed The Tudor Secret by CW Gortner, I simply loved The Tudor Conspiracy. Picking up a short time after the events in The Tudor Secret, we find Queen Mary upon the throne and negotiations for her marriage well under way. Our hero, Brendan Prescott, and his love, Kate are embedded in Elizabeth's household at Hatfield. Not for long. Summoned by William Cecil, Brendan has no choice but to journey to London and find employ at the royal court, feigning an allegiance to Queen Mary, the woman he once helped. Though he is sympathetic towards Queen Mary, Brendan is really at court to protect the Princess Elizabeth from the plots and cunning of not only the Spanish delegation, but even Elizabeth's so-called friend and Brendan's former employer, Robert Dudley who, though locked in the tower, appears to be manipulating events. With the Spaniards determined to indict Elizabeth for treason and deliver a death sentence and the Dudley's working for their own ends, Brendan has his work cut out.
Ensconced among the courtiers, Brendan doesn't know who to trust, or where to turn and is forced to make decisions, decisions that prove deadly and place not just his Princess at risk, but those he loves.
Fast-paced, evocative and well-written, this is a page turner par excellence that takes known history and turns it on its head in exciting and plausible ways. Cannot wait for the next instalment.
First off, I will not elaborate too much on the plot or put in any spoilers just in case you want to read this book.

This particular story centers around a feud between Mary who is Queen and her sister Elizabeth who wants to be queen. Add to the mix a variety of players who are on one side or the other, a few spies and you have the story of Mary and her sister Elizabeth.

I like the author Gortner, his writing style flows, the book is easy, the characters do come to life but I did have to look up many of the old English phrases or words from that era. If I might offer a suggestion for you, the reader, I would suggest you read these books in order, The Tudor Secret (book 1), The Tudor Conspiracy (Book 2) then his third The Tudor Vendetta, the reason being is The Tudor Conspiracy just ends abruptly, which I'm hoping means that book #3 will / should pick up where Book 2 ended. For me, I still prefer books that are "stand alone" books.

Finally, IMHO this is an ok book, not a "page turner stay up all night" type of book but if you're interested in the Tudor Era this will be an interesting read for you. I would have preferred one book, telling the entire story which is one reason for my 3 star rating.
