Wickedly Dangerous A Baba Yaga Novel Deborah Blake 9780425272923 Books

Excellent entry into the UF/PNR genre. When I tell you that I laughed outloud, I mean that literally. I was so enamored with this book that I was tweeting quotes and Facebook hounding my friends to read it as well.

Barbara Yager is a Baba Yaga. Her cover is adjunct professor of botany. Her chicken-legged hut is a recalcitrant Airstream now with perks, or is that quirks, like a fridge that might or might not deliver what you asked for. Her primary sidekick is a large pitbull who is actually a small dragon.

Liam is the sheriff who has problems with missing children and a no-confidence vote pending from the local council who hired him. The last thing he needs is a stranger with a big dog.

Turns out he does need Baba even if he's not the one who called her. The antics include biker dragons, slightly psychotic Faery Queens, and mysterious women.

I won't go into a lot of plot fal-de-rol but this book is very true to the Baba Yaga mythology. I loved loved loved it. So much that I bought the prequel novella (3.5 stars) and preordered book 2.

If you like sassy heroines who don't know how to handle love and damaged heroes who hover between alpha and beta without being whiny or overbearing, go get this book. :D

Wickedly Dangerous A Baba Yaga Novel Deborah Blake 9780425272923 Books Reviews

I enjoyed Wickedly Dangerous (Baba Yaga Book 1). I thought the story was intriguing and the characters were not always predictable. This was my first introduction to Baba Yaga and I enjoyed the premise that Baba Yaga was not always the same person. I thought that was interesting, but it was also one of the reasons I did not choose to continue the series immediately. There has to be something that attracts me to the lead characters and since this changes from book to book, I decided to wait and evaluate the future books individually. The authors also seem to vary and this threw another complication into my decision making process. I have to admit that one of the positive influences in this book is the "big white dog." I am a sucker for endearing animals. Perhaps this is not something I should include in an evaluation, but it can sway my decision about what to read or what to avoid. I am not necessarily consistently objective, but since this is one of my motivations and other readers comments can affect my choices, I thought it was only fair to provide the same criteria to my own evaluations, but perhaps I am revealing too much personal information.
Barbara Yager is one of three Baba Yagas in the United States, a modernized version of a Russian legend about a wicked witch that lived in a hut on chicken legs. But Barbara is definitely not like the legend. Summoned to Clearwater to help with finding a missing child, she meets up with the local sheriff, Liam McClellan, who is desperately looking for not one missing child but three. Although normally a solitary individual, Barbara finds herself attracted to Liam, and needs to find a way to complete her mission while keeping him at a distance. This is part of the Baba Yaga series, with two other novels and two novelettes. Barbara is a wonderful character and surrounds herself with great companions, including her dog/dragon, Chudo-Yudo, as well as the three mysterious Riders. The relationship between Barbara and Liam was fun to watch develop as they carefully edged around each other, while trying to solve these disappearances. I can't wait to continue reading this series with the next Baba Yaga book.
I so much wanted to like his book. I am Russian and Baba Yaga has been a favorite of mine since I was very little. In Russian tradition she is ambiguous, complex, and has brutal and unerring kind of justice that is not based on any human system of law. She is also insanely clever and knows basically everything about everybody and everything. And of course she is neither mortal nor immortal - she is death itself and she looks is. So I kinda choked a bit when she turned out to be 'stunningly beautiful" , but hey, it is a modern book - I was more than willing to play along. Then Chudo Yudo turned out to be a dragon and not what it is in Russia - a Whale upon whose back a city is built, but again, no problem, as long as the story is good.
The first pages that were setting thing up were fun and I was enjoying it , but as soon as the actual story began with Maya making an appearance, I started to lose interest. The plot did not seem to move, it got stuck between an amateurish detective story, a drop of magic, and very formulaic romance. Magical characters spoke like some corporate management cast. A Queen of the Outer World was utterly predictable and derivative. Baba Yaga came across like a real idiot she is 80+ years old and has a laptop, drives a BMW but is amazed by a cell phone? She does not know much, she cannot do much without her helpers other than summon a storm; she has 2 emotional responses to everything this is not right, and I am now really pissed off. She gets outraged at things that no Baba Yaga would even notice. She behaved as a very young witch wannabe, not as the most powerful force between 2 interconnected realms. And the whole cookie cutter love story with the sheriff, really? Anyway, the upshot was I lost interest and could not make myself care. Too bad really, it was a very interesting premise.
