The Dreamsbane of Tamalor by Bradley James Simpson has all of the elements I enjoy in a work of fantasy: magic, fascinating characters and a plot of good against evil.

The well-developed characters, especially Kiril, Boric, Lithtaril, Wolf, Mirin and Sunray, work toward defeating Darglo, the enemy. The obstacles that get in their way lead to some quite interesting plot twists.

The medieval setting and a conjured tower perfectly fit the fantasy genre. Escape the reality of the day-to-day world and enter the Dreamsbane of Tamalor.

Dreamsbane of Tamalor takes the reader on an other world adventure. The cast of characters comes alive from their initial physical descriptions that tell enough for the reader to walk beside them knowing who they have for companionship. But, throughout this brief novel Bradley Simpson gives us friends, cohorts, people we care deeply about as we watch the characters unfold and become more than cardboard paper dolls.

It doesn't matter that Mirin is six feet tall, but we know he is because Simpson tells us. What we discover as we are led through his unfolding is Mirin is a real man. He may be a wizard, but he is also a loving father, husband and fellow traveler ready to do battle in his underwear, without his armor to protect him, to defend his friends if necessary. His magic, his power is stronger than the other characters in some ways. But, Mirin isn't a lone traveler, a super human. He is, like Simpson's other characters, flawed a little. With a kink in his armor he becomes more real, more credible, a better friend, someone this reader enjoyed tagging along with as he deftly weaves his way through the labyrinth of this adventure novel.

Simpson's characters are strong in their role, but limited by their humanity and are never totally infallible.

Each encounter with `the darkness' (synonymous with evil) we go through with Mirin, his wife Sunray, their daughter Summer, or Davis Wolfsbane, Linda Hawkins, , or Shinera and Roland (another husband and wife team) we see Simpson's artistry with world building/character development unfold. In today's market this would be a perfect candidate for the `Graphic Novels' type books that are becoming so popular. (written and put into the type format with pictures reminiscent of comic book styles.)

Vivid imagery creates mind pictures for the reader as we learn as much about the writer as we do the characters. Women are treated with a great deal of respect. Love is most important, more important than being victorious or right in battle, more important even than self.

Simpson gives us enough details to guide our vision, but not so much that we can't paint our own canvas. This skill alone is enough to recommend you read Dreamsbane of Tamalor. The reader always wants more; more about the characters, their backgrounds their daily life; More about the settings, how did they come upon their names, the villagers that inhabit them; more about events breathed on briefly like dew on a spider web, what about the tale of `The Chaos of Warriors,' more more; Snowthorn Mountain, how did it get its name, tell us like you told us of the Hydra Inn's origin. I want to meet and hang out with Lithtaril and know more of her healing powers...not the brief brush stroke of her caring and strength.

The clever use of Kirin's ability to travel into and through dreams is but one of the unique features that pushes this novel beyond just another fantasy adventure.

I urge you to grab your copy of Dreamsbane of Tamalor and lose yourself in (women will say) an incredible love story that has all the characteristics (the men will say )of an adventure story, but with soul.
Dreamsbane of Tamalor is an adventurous tale of magic, evil, friends and love. Everyone must come together to save the lives of friends and loved ones in hopes of defeating Darglo the Lord of Sleep and Dreams.

Sunray is the wife of the wizard Mirin. She is bitten by a werewolf when the beasts attacked General Frederick Wolf's castle and is beginning to suffer from lycanthropy. Kiril being able to travel through dreamscapes, is accosted by Darglo and injured severely by one of his shadowy enforcers. Along with Wolf and his new wife and healer Linda and a few other soldiers they make their way into Darkhaven Forrest in search of the mystic healer Lithtaril.

With Lithtaril's help and the strength of the others, they must pull together to defeat Darglo. Darglo speaks in riddles about what his powers can do once he takes over. But one will have the power to stop him. Who?

Bradley James Simpson's fantasy novella is an adventure into another realm that entertains the readers imaginary side. I am not sure what the time period is but it seems medieval of the sorts with magic, a dragon and wizards. The beginning was a little too jumbled with the in depth explaining of each character. It just stared out slowly, but once you got to where all the action is, the book was over well before I realized I was reading the last page. Jump into the world of dreams and magic with Mr. Simpson, you will be glad you did. 4 Hearts
